Justin was born and raised in Haslett, Michigan just outside of East Lansing. He began in music at an early age, studying classical piano at the age of 7. As a child, he competed in and won several local and state piano competitions. In high school, Justin discovered his calling as an artist, branching out into many different art forms: singing, acting, jazz piano, guitar, bass guitar, drums, rock bands, and jazz bands. He also won vocal competitions in the state area as a high school student.
His strong academics, as well as strong artistic talents, led him to the University of Michigan, where he received a full-ride scholarship. The Sidney and Irene Shipman Scholarship is given to only 10 incoming freshman at the University of Michigan and is one of the most prestigious scholarships given by any major university.
At Michigan, Justin continued to grow both artistically and intellectually. He performed in many plays, film, musicals, and operas both on and off campus. Justin performed at Music Hall in Detroit, Michigan in the 50th Anniversary production of the classic opera AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS. This historic production was directed by the legendary composer himself- the late Gian Carlo Menotti. Justin also performed in the 25th Anniversary of FOLLIES at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor which included many members of the original Broadway cast as well as Tony-winner Donna McKechnie.
Keeping with tradition dating back to when he was a 5th grader, middle school student, and high school student, Justin was elected the student speaker for the graduating class of both the School of Music, as well as the entire University of Michigan. Justin spoke at commencement with UM President Mary Sue Coleman and the late football coaching legend Bo Schembechler in front of a crowd of almost 50,000 at Michigan Stadium. Justin graduated as a James B. Angell Scholar. This is Michigan’s most prestigious academic distinction. It is given to only a handful of students every year from across the university. It is given to those who have achieved all A’s for at least 8 straight semesters. Justin graduated with highest degree distinctions from both the Music School with a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance and Literature, Sciences, and the Arts with a BA in English. Justin also graduated with honors from 4 national collegiate honor societies: Delta Epsilon Iota, Phi Sigma Theta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Golden Key.
After graduation, Justin moved to New York City to begin his career as a performer, but discovered later that his true calling in life was to become a voice teacher and vocal coach. As a performer, Justin performed in plays, films, and musicals in New York as well as throughout the country. Some credits include THE GOOD SHEPHERD (film) directed by Robert De Niro, LES MISERABLES (Equity Tour), WERE THE WORLD MINE (New York Musical Theatre Festival) with Anthony Rapp, THE YEATS PROJECT (Off-Broadway at the Irish Repertory Theatre), THE PILGRIM PAPERS (Berkshire Theatre Festival) directed by Tony Award-winning director Vivian Matalon.
